Reading data and built-in voices
PageNarrator processes webpage text, selected text, PDFs, reading position, and highlighting in your browser. Built-in Kokoro voices run locally. English OCR for scanned PDFs also runs on your device, using files included in the extension. PageNarrator does not send reading content, URLs, or browsing history to PageNarrator servers for narration.
Built-in voice downloads
When you prepare a voice or start reading, missing Kokoro model files download from Hugging Face and its file-delivery hosts. Hugging Face and these hosts receive normal connection information, including your IP address and the requested files. Hugging Face does not receive narration text from built-in speech. Successfully downloaded files are saved in the extension's browser cache and can be reused offline for the same voice and processing mode, including after a browser restart. A different voice or mode may need more files. Clearing or evicting that cache requires downloading missing files again. Speech synthesis runs on your device; executable code is included in the extension.
Optional custom voices
Imported model files run on your device; their narration text is not sent to a provider. A single-file English Kokoro import also downloads missing tokenizer and Heart voice files from Hugging Face; complete model folders supply their own supporting files. If you configure and select an endpoint voice, the extension sends narration text and voice settings to the local server or third-party API endpoint you choose. An optional API key is sent to that endpoint for authentication. Testing a voice sends a sample sentence. These requests support speech synthesis only; the provider receives the text and applies its own privacy policy, retention rules, and terms. Use built-in Kokoro voices to keep speech synthesis on your device.
Online documents
When you open an online PDF for reading, the extension requests it from the document host. That host receives the requested URL and normal connection information and may receive existing browser credentials needed to access the document. This document retrieval is separate from speech synthesis.
Extension storage
The extension stores preferences, voice choices, diagnostics, page and PDF URLs and titles, reading positions, and a text excerpt of up to 160 characters for each saved position in local browser-extension storage. Custom-voice configurations, including endpoint URLs and optional API keys, are also stored locally until removed or the extension's storage is cleared. Imported model files, including any reference audio supplied with a voice package, are kept in the extension’s browser cache until you remove the voice or clear that cache. They are not synced to PageNarrator servers.
Chrome Web Store Limited Use
PageNarrator uses website and PDF content, page URLs, settings, voice choices, diagnostics, and reading position only for narration, highlighting, and resume. It does not sell this data, use it for advertising or lending, transfer it for unrelated purposes, or allow humans to read it. PageNarrator follows the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including its Limited Use requirements.
Website and support
The website does not run advertising or behavioral tracking scripts. Cloudflare processes ordinary hosting logs. Some pages load Google Fonts from Google, which receives the font requests and normal connection information. If you email support, PageNarrator processes your address and message to respond and maintain support records.
Your choices
You can remove a custom voice in the toolbar settings. This deletes its saved configuration and any imported model files and reference audio. Switch back to a built-in voice to stop sending narration text to an endpoint. Removing a configuration does not delete data already received by that provider; contact the provider about its retention and deletion options. You can remove locally stored extension data, including downloaded voice files, by clearing the extension’s storage or uninstalling it. You can request access, correction, or deletion of support correspondence by emailing support@pagenarrator.com.
